On Monday, it was reported that team assistant Rick Stansbury will return for another season with the Memphis Tigers. He believes that the program has what it takes to recover from last season’s second-half plunge that eventually cost them their bid to reach the NCAA tournament for a third straight year.
“I’m committed to being here and helping Coach in any little way I can to get this thing back to winning championships,” Stansbury told The Commercial Appeal. “I’ve never wavered on my belief and support of coach Hardaway and the job he’s done and can do. I have the utmost confidence that Coach can get this program back to prominence, and we need the support of the community to help do that.”
The Tigers got off to their best season starts under head coach Penny Hardaway until the AAC portion of their 2023-2024 tipped-off. Memphis would incur multiple losing streaks, including a four-game stretch where they lost to conference opponents South Florida, Tulane, UAB, and Rice.
There was still hope that the Tigers could qualify for a tournament appearance, but that was ruined when Wichita State defeated them in the AAC tournament. By far, Stansbury is one of the more experienced assistants in college basketball who brings a breadth of knowledge and recruiting insight to the program. He’s had previous experience in programs such as Western Kentucky and Mississippi State and has 442 career wins as a head coach. Stansbury served as interim head coach for the Tigers’ first three games, while Hardaway served a three-game suspension for violating NCAA recruiting rules. The program is expected to be very active in the transfer portal as it attempts to field a brand new roster for the 2024-2025 campaign.
